August 31:

Busy Afternoon for VFD
VERONA – Engine 1, Brush 6, ATV 1, Tanker 7 and Fitch-Rona 45 paged today for a grass fire on Black Cherry Ct. in the Town of Verona. The call to the 911 Center stated that the owner’s yard was on fire and that the fire was spreading into a woods and heading toward the owner’s house.

Fire 3 was the first on the scene and informed units that there was a brush fire and the woods were starting to be effected. Brush 6 arrived on the scene and was assigned to attack the fire that was starting to spread into the woods. Engine 4 also responded and they were assigned to put out the fire that was heading toward the house.

While units were on scene putting out the grass fire, The Communications Center called Fire 3 and informed him that there was another call in the City of Verona. The incident was on West Verona Rd. where a customer at the Cenex gas station had put unleaded fuel into their diesel fuel vehicle. They then preceded to siphon out the fuel into a garbage can, which they left shortly after that.

Engine 1 and Engine 4 went to check on the situation there, since police had informed the fire station that the garbage can was leaking when they arrived.

Firefighters transferred the diesel/unleaded fuel mixture into fuel safe containers.

Brush 6 was returning from the grass fire on Black Cherry Ct. when they were paged to respond for another brush fire in the Town of Springfield in Mt. Horeb’s territory. The 911 Center received a call saying that there was a grass fire or some type of outdoor fire on Spring Rose Rd. Brush 6 responded to the call and were shortly returned by Mt. Horeb Fire 1.

August 30:

Stove Left On
VERONA -- Engine 1, Squad 5 and Fitch-Rona 45 were paged to Four Winds Manor for a report of gas leak in the building. Fitch-Rona 45 was the first unit on scene and they found nothing showing from the outside. Engine 1 arrived on location and investigated the source of the gas leak.

Engine 1 found a burner on a stove in the basement kitchen had been left on and that is where the gas leak was coming from. Engine 1 shut off the valve and returned to quarters.

August 29:

Burning Smell in Apartment
FITCHBURG – Verona Engine 1 was paged to respond with Fitchburg Fire Department for a reported “burning smell” coming from a residence on Thurston Rd.

Fitchburg Engine 2 was the first on scene and investigated the burning order complaint, and determined that no other units were needed, Verona Engine 1 then returned.

August 21:

Ladder 3 Helps with Silo Rescue
Silo RescueTOWN OF OREGON – Verona Ladder 3 was called to assist Oregon Fire & EMS for a male trapped in a silo. Verona Ladder 3 got on location and used the ladder to get to the area of silo that the patient was in. The crew then opened a hole into the side of the silo and gained access to the patient and provided first aid until Madison Fire Department arrived.

Oregon Commander had the Madison Fire Department Tactical Rescue Team respond and once they were on location, the started preparing the patient for extrication out of the silo.

After being in the silo for over an hour, MFD TAC Rescue was able to get the patient out. The patient was then transported to the hospital by Fitch-Rona EMS.


August 8th:


2 Alarm Fire
VERONA- VFD was paged for a report of a grill that exploded and caught the owner’s garage on fire. Verona Engine 1 along with Fitchburg Engine 2 was the first units on scene and quickly attacked the fast spreading fire.

When units arrived, the garage had heavy fire and the fire was starting to burn the house to the east. Fire was also starting to go into the attic from the eves.

Units quickly hit the fire with water and another crew was sent to the roof to open up the roof (cut a hole in it) to ventilate the smoke out of the attic.

The fire was contained to the garage and the attic above the garage and the rest of the house was saved except for smoke damage.
