December 23:
Carbon Monoxide Scare
VERONA -- VFD and Fitch-Rona EMS were paged to an address on Basswood Ave, the call into the 911 Center said that their CO (Carbon Monoxide) alarm was sounding and that someone was feeling ill there. The 911 operator instructed the caller to open the windows and get out of the building and wait for the fire department to arrive.
Fitch-Rona EMS was the first unit on the scene; they checked the interior of the home and used a gas meter to determine if there was the presence of CO. They discovered that there was a high amount of CO in the building, and the crew quickly exited.
Engine 1 arrived on scene and the crew entered the building with their full gear on and breathing air from the SCBA's (Self Contained Breathing Apparatus). They went to the basement with the gas monitor to check for CO readings near the furnace, which they found the levels in the house to still be dangerously high.
Crews proceeded to turn off the heater and ventilate the building till MG&E (Madison Gas and Electric) arrived on scene. Once MG&E was on scene, Engine 1's crew went back into the basement and took another reading from their gas monitor, to see if the levels were high. MG&E then shut the gas off to the building and bled the rest of the lines to help fix the problem.
Units returned and the scene was turned over to MG&E.
