It is difficult for emergency vehicles, utility trucks and delivery trucks to find homes and businesses whose address numbers are not properly posted. Here are some suggestions and the City Ordinance about address letter in the City of Verona.
Can we find you in an emergency?
Clearly posted house numbers can save precious time should an emergency occur. Can life saving personnel find you?
- Response time is critical; seconds lost can mean the difference between life and death.
- Fire departments in the U.S. respond to a fire every 15 seconds.
- Fire double in size every twenty seconds!
- Approximately 84% of all fatal fires burn 10 or more minutes before the fire department in notified.
City of Verona Code of Ordinance Section 6-2-12(b) requires that house numbers are displayed upon the building.
- Your house number must be printed in numbers that are NO LESS THAN 3 INCHES TALL and in contrasting color from your house color.
- Your house numbers should be visible up to 150 feet, from all angles.
- Keep your numbers clearly visible throughout the year. Trees, shrubs and other landscaping can block your house numbers.
- AS a test, ask neighbors, friends or service people who visit your home if they saw your house numbers easily.
- Encourage family, friends and neighbors to post their house numbers, too!
Additional things you can do to increase your level of safety:
- Make a fire escape plan for your family. Find two exits out of every room. Pick a meeting place outside. Practice makes perfect – hold a family fire drill at least twice each year.
- Have a working smoke alarm on every level of your home. For the best detection and notification protection, install both ionization – and photoelectric – type smoke alarms. Some models provide dual coverage. The type will be printed on the box or package. Put them inside or near every bedroom. Test them monthly to make sure they work. Put in new batteries once a year.
- Teach every family member to “Stop, Drop and Roll” if clothes catch fire.
- Lear how and when to use a fire extinguisher.
- If you have a fire in your home, once you get out, STAY OUT. DO NOT GO BACK INSIDE FOR ANY REASON!
- Report all fires, immediately call 911! U.S. fire departments respond to over 2,000,000 fires each year.
- Contact your local fire department for additional information for help in protecting your home.
