September 29:
Car Vs Dump Truck
TOWN OF VERONA – VFD along with Town of Madison Rescue 66 were paged to a car versus dump truck on Hwy M just south of Hwy PD. Several calls were called into the 911 Center reporting that the car had struck the dump truck and that someone was trapped inside the vehicle.
Verona Engine 1 was the first on scene and found the driver of the car trapped in her vehicle and had some injuries. Engine 1 officer quickly asked for Fitchburg Squad 2 to be sent to assist with extrication efforts.
Town of Madison Rescue 66 got on location and took over patient care while Verona fire units worked on extricating the patient out of her vehicle.
Fitchburg’s squad was returned to quarters because Verona Squad 5 arrived on scene first and assisted Engine 1 with extrication.
Town of Madison Rescue 66 transported the driver to the hospital, while fire units picked up and returned.

September 28:
Sprinkler System Stops Fire
FITCHBURG – Ladder 3 was paged to respond with Fitchburg Fire units to a reported apartment building on fire on King James Ct. Several calls came into the 911 Center saying the building was on fire, but no reports of anyone trap.
Fitchburg Engine 2 was first on location and reported nothing seen from the outside but continued in all units based on reports from the Communications Center.
Engine 2 quickly made entry into the apartment building and found the apartment where the fire was to be reported in. Once inside, they determined that there had been a fire, but it was extinguished by the sprinkler system that was in the building.
Ladder 3 was returned by Fitchburg Engine 2 before they were on location.
No one was injured in this fire and it was being invest aged by Fitchburg Fire and Police.

September 26:
Smoke Investigation Ends up Being Burnt Food
VERONA – Verona Fire along with Fitchburg, Oregon and Belleville Fire Departments were paged out to a multifamily residence on W. Verona Ave. The page indicated that someone called reporting smoke inside the apartment complex but no visible fire.
Units arrived on scene to find smoke in the hallway and started to evacuate residence out of their apartments. Another crew went to work looking for the source of the smoke.
After everyone was evacuated out of the building, the source of the smoke was located and determined that there wasn’t a fire but the smoke was cause by burnt food.
No one was injured and firefighters help residences back into their apartments.

Open House 2008
VERONA – Verona Fire Department held its annual open house today. There were fire truck rides, home sprinkler demonstrations, a bake sale, and many other hands on demonstrations. One extra event this year was a silent auction to raise money to help with medical cost for nineteen year VFD veteran Keith Peterson, who is battling cancer. Pizza was donated by Papa Murphy’s and Culver’s donated chocolate and vanilla custard. Click to see pictures

Stinky Smoke Smell
VERONA – VFD was paged out for a report of smoke that was making a “stinky smell” in the area of Edenberry Dr. Units arrived on scene of a residence to find a small burning pit that was creating some smoke. Nothing else was on fire or in danger of the small burning pit.

September 19:
Single Vehicle Rollover
Town of Verona – Engine 1, Squad 5 and Fitch-Rona (EMS) 45 were paged to a rollover accident on Hwy 18/151 on the west side of the City of Verona.
Initial reports to the Communications Center was a single vehicle was traveling towards Mt. Horeb and rolled while negotiating the curve and ended up in the opposite lanes of travel. The vehicle was occupied by a lone female driver.
Fitch-Rona 45 was the first unit on scene and made patient contact and also determined that the patient needed to be extricated from her vehicle.
Squad 5 and Engine 1 got on location and started extrication operations. The extrication team had to work on only getting the door open to get the patient out. Fitch-rona then took over patient care while VFD helped with traffic control.

Fire department rallies around ailing comrade (article from Veronapress.com)
VERONA -- To say Keith Peterson has hit a rough stretch of luck is putting it mildly. In 2006, the 50-year-old Verona resident lost his job after 20 years as a carpenter. The next year, his 2-year-old granddaughter nearly died from abuse by a childcare provider. And in May, Peterson learned he had colon cancer. Click to see entire story.

IRON MAN 2008
VERONA -- The City of Verona hosted part of the bicycling course for the annual Iron Man Wisconsin. A good majority of the bicycling section of the race is in Verona Fire Department's response area and VFD again kept staff at the station in case there was an emergency. Another great Iron Man race and only one call for the fire department, one that wasn't related to the race.

Carbon Monoxide Brochure Added
With the start of colder days and nights, many people are going to start using their heaters to warm up their residence. One thing that people forget is to make sure that their heaters are not leaking Carbon Monoxide into the house. VFD has added a brochure that can be downloaded if anyone is looking for information on Carbon Monoxide in the house.

September 6:
Do Not Store Items in an Oven
VERONA -- VFD was paged today for a report of smoke inside a residence on Church St. UNits arrived on scene to find the house heavily filled with smoke. Firefighters went inside to investigate the source of the smoke and found that the stove was producing the smoke and that something inside the stove had caught on fire. The attack crew opened the stove to find that the home owner had stored pantry items in the stove and the stove was turned on and started the items on fire. Crews ventilated the house and made sure that there was no fire.
*Fire safety reminder for the day*
Do not store items inside your stove at any cost. This call is an example of what could happened to your house if something is inside the stove that isn't suppose to be there.

Dinner Time Grass Fire
VERONA -- VFD was paged out for a report of a grass fire behind an address on Stoneridge Ct. Fire 3 responded straight to the scene and determined that the home owner that the reported grass was at, had an illegal burn bit. Fire 3 asked the home owner to extinguisher the fire bit.We will be posting soon the burning ordinances for the City and Town of Verona for people who have questions.

Early Morning Burnt Food
VERONA -- Engine 1 was paged out for a fire alarm sounding on Schweitzer Dr. Engine 1 arrived on location to find smoke in the hallway. They quickly determined that the smoke was caused by some burnt cookies in a microwave. Engine 1 ventilated the building and reset the alarm.
