Duties

Under direct supervision responds to fire alarms and other requests for emergency assistance. See the Paid-on-Call Firefighter/First Responder Position Description for complete details.

Minimum Requirements

1.        Age

a.        At least 18 years of age

2.        Education

a.        High School graduation

                 i.      Proof Required

b.        GED Equivalent

3.        Possession of a valid Wisconsin Drivers license and approval from department insurance carrier

4.        Must reside within the geographical district designated by the Fire District Board Commission

Desirable Qualifications (Training Provided After Hire)

1.        Wisconsin Firefighter 1 & 2 Certified

a.        Firefighter 1 certification must be obtained during the probationary period.

2.        Wisconsin Fire Responder CPR/AED or Nationally Registered EMT.

3.        Wisconsin Driver Operator and Aerial Operator Certified.

4.        Wisconsin Emergency Vehicle Operator Certified.

These are DESIRABLE qualifications; these certifications will be provided while on the department.

Medical Standards

1.        All applicants must pass a medical examination administered by a department physician.

2.        Vision

a.        Normal visual function and acuity with normal color vision.

3.        Hearing

a.        Normal without corrective aids.

4.        Weight

a.        Must be in proportion to height.

Selection Process – Eligibility List

1.        Written Application

a.        Each applicant must complete and forward required forms and resume to the Chief Fire Officer or his/her designee for review.

2.        Background Investigation

a.        A thorough investigation into the applicant’s background will be conducted.

3.        Driver’s License Review

a.        The applicant’s driver license and record will be reviewed and must be approved by the Verona Fire Department’s insurance carrier.

4.        Applicants successfully meeting the requirements 1-4 shall be placed on an Eligibility List for future paid-on-call employment consideration.

Selection Process – When a vacancy occurs

1.        Strength and Agility Evaluation

a.        Applicants will be selected from the Eligibility List to participate in the Strength and Agility Evaluation. This consists of a series of physical tests to determine the applicant’s strength and agility. Successful completion is required prior to employment and annually thereafter.

2.        Oral Interview

a.        When a vacancy becomes available, applicants placed on the Eligibility List will be invited to an oral interview with the Chief Fire Officer and/or his/her designee.

3.        Medical Examination

a.        Prior to employment applicants must pass a medical examination administered by a Verona Fire Department selected physician.

Probationary Period

1.        Eighteen (18) months
