Welcome to the Verona Fire Department website.  On this website you will be able access valuable information in regards to the fire department, fire safety, educational materials and application to join the department.  The Verona Fire Department responds to, on average, 500 calls a year.  The types of calls include but are not limited to: fires, hazardous materials, rescue, motor vehicle collisions, extrications and medical assists.  The department protects 37 square miles that is comprised of the City and Town of Verona and a small portion of the Town of Springdale.  The estimated protected population is 15,000.

The Verona Fire Department is a combination department that has a part-time Fire Chief and a full-time Assistant Chief, Captain, Lieutenant and firefighter.  Currently there are 24 paid on call personnel that are very dedicated to protecting and helping the citizens in and out of the district.  Trainings take place every Monday from 1900 to 2100 hours.

Duties:

Under direct supervision responds to fire alarms and other requests for emergency assistance.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 18 years old
  • Graduate of a High School or GED equivalent
  • Valid Wisconsin driver’s license
  • Reside within the geographical district designated by the Fire District Board Commission

Primary Responsibilities:

Under the general management of the Fire Chief, this position is responsible for responding to requests for emergency/non-emergency calls for service and performing fire prevention inspections. This position generally functions at the task level to stabilize emergency incidents and identify municipal prevention ordinance violations and report them to a supervisor. The position requires extensive training in the operation and maintenance of motorized fire apparatus, hand tools and power equipment. Performance of assigned duties may occur in hazardous settings under a wide array of environmental conditions.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform duties and activities as may be required by municipal ordinance, state statute, state administrative code, agency policy as it relates to ensuring compliance with building construction, fire prevention and life safety codes.
  • During the course of training, review buildings for potential fire hazards and violations and forward findings to code enforcement personnel.
  • Instruct the public on fire and life safety topics.
  • Attend training drills and other in-service training activities conducted or sanctioned by the department in accordance with department policy requirements.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of fire prevention and suppression, technical rescue, fire and life safety codes and public safety education; hazardous materials, weapons of mass destruction and terrorism response.
  • Operate and maintain equipment and facilities in compliance with fire department policies and procedures.
  • Respond to emergency and non-emergency events following fire department operating protocols.
  • Be able to perform in an emergency or non-emergency environment at a level equivalent to their training and experience, yet at a minimum, at a level equivalent to the standards set by Firefighter Level I or II qualification.
  • Must be able to perform and function under a variety of extremes, i.e. temperature, humidity, weather conditions, limited visibility, etc….
  • Must be able to perform in restrictive clothing and confined spaces as well as above ground elevations.
  • Must have adequate communications skills to be able to hear commands, carry out commands and provide feedback to the incident commander or people he/she is working with; provide hand signals as well as write down information for reporting purposes and use computers.
  • Must be able to handle the heavy work demands of the position, i.e. removing a person from a hazardous environment, lifting heavy material and doing so within a team of other firefighters or un-assisted, etc….
  • Must be able to work within a team and function in a group, yet work independently with limited supervision.
  • Maintain First Responder, CPR/AED Certification.
  • These duties will remain applicable to staff as they are promoted to higher ranks.
