The Verona Fire Department is a suburban combination Fire Department located on the southwest side of the City of Madison the State Capital of Wisconsin and the second largest city in the state.  The Verona Fire Department is operated by the City of Verona in Dane County Wisconsin.  The Verona Fire Department provides fire and rescue services to a population of approximately 14,000 residents and covers 32 square miles out of one station.  In addition, we respond and assist Fitch-Rona EMS Paramedics on EMS calls.

Prior to January 1, 2014, the Department operated as a Fire District owned by both the City of Verona and the Town of Verona until the Fire District was dissolved by both parties and the City of Verona began operating the Fire Department and providing service to the Town of Verona under a long term contract.

The personnel makeup of the Department is as follows:

Full-time Staff: we currently have 8 full-time staff members, the Fire Chief, Deputy Chief, 3 Lieutenants, and 3 Firefighters. The Fire Chief and Deputy Chief work Monday through Friday and the other full-time members work a 48 hour work week on duty 24 hours and off duty 48 hours on a rotating basis.

Part-time Staff: we currently have an Assistant Chief of Training, an Assistant Chief of Fire Inspection/Prevention, and an Administrative Assistant.

Paid-On-Premise Staff: we utilize the Paid-On-Premise staff (part-time) to augment the full-time staff every day of the week on a 12-hour shift from 6:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. or 6:00 p.m. - 6:00 a.m. We currently have 3 paid-on-premise Lieutenants.

Paid-On-Call Staff: we utilize the Paid-On-Call staff to augment the full-time and Paid-On-Premise staff for multi-unit responses. Paid-On-Call staff are also used to fill open positions as needed and if available.

Fire Science Interns: we operate an Internship Program with students that are enrolled in Madison Area Technical College Degree Program.  We have four Intern positions that live in the fire station and work 24 hour shifts.  In return we provide them with a great experience, housing, uniforms, training, monthly stipend, pay for calls, and reimbursement for tuition and books based on grade point average.

We are staffed 24/7/365 with an Officer, Driver/Operator, and 2 Firefighters utilizing full-time, paid-on-premise, paid-on-call, and Interns.
